Micro Cinema
— nomadic and free

                mi·cro·cin·e·ma
noun: microcinema; plural noun: microcinemas; noun: micro-cinema; plural noun: micro-cinemasa genre consisting of low-budget alternative or independent films and videos."she took a course in microcinema at the state college" (NB: this is most definitely not how this term is used colloquially. Furthermore, after personally teaching at a handful of academic institutions, not once have I ever seen a course in “microcinema”)a small room or theater used to show low-budget independent films."the campus has three microcinemas" (NB: again, odd example, as I have not in all my decades of experiences at many campuses ever seen a campus with its own microcinema, let alone, three!)So. What does it mean to us? A microcinema is a pliable space to gather around a glowing screen, like moths to a light. To reflect together, to ponder, to wonder, and to explore. To be moved, to laugh, to just be with others for some duration of time. We are not a non-profit, or a business. We’re just a small group of people with a couple of projectors (16mm, super8, and digital) and a desire to watch good films and videos together.
We occassionally run workshops and WIP nights, and often co-sponsor other great programs at our local festivals (Ann Arbor Film Festival and Media City- Windsor) or with other local organizations (Cinema Lamont, The Film Lab, Corktown Cinema, etc).

Announcing Mothlight Workshops!

In 2022 Julia Yezbick and Shanna Maurizi met in a cafe on Livernois and Mothlight Workshops was born. Since then we’ve held several multi-day workshops with various partners around the city including Carpenter Creative Corridor and Detroit Narrative Agency, and plan to hold many more in the coming years. The aim with these workshops is to build a local ecosystem around 16mm filmmaking, to gather people around a common love for creative expression, and to demonstrate that this practice is more accessible than people might have previously assumed. Mothlight Workshops offers no-cost 16mm filmmaking workshops, public screenings, and equipment access to help build a deeper and more active celluloid film presence among Detroiters from all walks of life and experience levels.
Join us! Watch this space for upcoming workshop announcements.

UPCOMING WORKSHOPS:
May-June 2025: ANALOG ALCHEMY
In partnership with BULK Space Media Lab and Eightfold Collective, and working with custom 3D-printed matte boxes, this workshop is not to be missed! Participants will learn the basics of shooting on a Bolex 16mm camera, hand-processing their own film, and using the matte boxes to acheive in-camera double exposures.
Click on “Apply here” below for full details and application.
APPLY HERE Deadline: April 20, 2025

MMC06 08302013/ On Holiday
Curated by Brandon Walley

ON HOLIDAY
A
Distant Horizon, Ryan Marino6:42, 16mm, 2012Remote landscapes elicit fragments of strata and sediment suggesting an existence marked not by man but by time. A vibrant sun illuminates the contours of the land providing a natural show of light and shadow play."We are lost between the abyss within us and the boundless horizons outside us." - Robert Smithson
I Have Always Been A Dreamer, Sabine Gruffat78:00, 16mm transferred to video, 2012I Have Always Been A Dreamer is an essay film about globalization and urban ecology using the examples of two cities in contrasting states of development: Dubai, UAE and Detroit, U.S.A. Within the context of a boom and bust economy, the film questions the collective ideologies that shape the physical landscape and impact local communities.
ALL I EVER WANTED, Scott Northrup5:00, 8mm transferred to video, 2013False memories harvested from found 8mm travel films.
Mirrorhole, Matt Rossoni7:00, dual 16mm, 2013The use of dual non-overlapping screens that "spread" the ontological stability of a single image across multiple spaces that fade in and out in metrical rhythms foregrounds issues of similarity and difference both spatial and temporal.
A Park for the City, Nicole Macdonald35:00, Video, 2013Belle Isle, on the Detroit River, is the largest urban island park in North America. The center of the island is twenty acres of wild nature that was originally a Victorian zoo, established as a diversion for city dwellers over a hundred years ago. Now boarded up and closed due to shortfalls in Detroit city funding, the zoo is sealed off by high cyclone fences and padlocked gates, a no-man's land of flora and fauna left undisturbed to form an ecology of its own design.
Passage Upon the Plume, Fern Silva6:30, 16mm, 2011“Those who go thither, they return not again.”Plumes dust the arid land, east to west, shapeshifting as they lift in ascension. Something lowers. An ark ran aground where revolution took root: ropes raise stones in baskets. Hearts heavier and lighter than the feather, permitted passage. Tethered or freed, resting from life or dawning anew. - Charity Coleman
